Artificial Turf vs. Desert Landscaping in Las Vegas: Which Is Right for Your Yard?
Updated: Oct 2
Most Las Vegas homeowners who give up on a thirsty lawn end up choosing between two options: artificial turf, or desert landscaping with rock and drought-tolerant plants. Both save water. They feel very different to live with. Here is an honest comparison.
How each one looks and feels
Turf gives you a green, soft yard all year. It looks like a well-kept lawn in January and in August. Desert landscaping (often called xeriscape) uses rock, decomposed granite, cactus, agave and desert shrubs. Done well it looks clean and natural, but it is a yard you look at more than a yard you play on.
Kids and pets
This is where turf wins clearly. Children can run and fall on it, and dogs can play on it without tracking in dust or burning paws on hot rock. Our pet turf drains completely and rinses clean with a hose. Rock yards are hard on bare feet and paws, and many desert plants have spines.
Maintenance
Turf: no mowing, no watering to keep it alive, no fertilizer. Rinse it occasionally and brush high-traffic areas.
Desert landscaping: less work than grass, but not zero. Weeds come up through rock, plants need trimming, and drip irrigation needs checking.
Water use
Both use far less water than natural grass, which is why either one makes sense here. Turf needs no irrigation at all. Desert plants need a small amount through a drip system.
Heat
Every surface gets hot in a Las Vegas summer. Rock and concrete hold heat late into the evening. Turf with cooling technology stays cooler than standard turf and cools down quickly in shade or after a quick rinse.
Cost
Turf usually costs more up front than rock, because of the base preparation and the material. Over time it has very little upkeep cost, and it comes with a lifetime manufacturer warranty. Every yard is different, so the only accurate number is a written quote for your space.
The water rebate
If you are replacing living grass, the SNWA Water Smart Landscapes rebate may apply. It requires plants over at least half of the converted area, so rebate projects are usually a mix of plants, rock and turf rather than turf alone.
You do not have to pick one
The best yards we build combine both: turf where your family and pets actually spend time, desert plants and rock along the edges, and pavers or a patio cover for shade and seating. You get a usable green space and a yard that fits the desert.
