Does Artificial Turf Get Too Hot in Las Vegas?

Updated: Oct 2

It is the first question almost every Las Vegas homeowner asks us, and it is a fair one. When it is 110 degrees outside, nobody wants a backyard they cannot walk on.

The honest answer: every outdoor surface heats up in direct summer sun, and turf is no exception. What matters is how hot it gets, how fast it cools down, and what you can do about it.

How hot does turf get?

On a clear July afternoon, turf in full sun gets hot to the touch, the same way concrete, pavers, rock and a pool deck do. Rock and concrete also hold that heat well into the evening. Turf cools down quickly once it is shaded or the sun drops, so mornings and evenings, when most families actually use the yard, are comfortable.

What makes our turf cooler

Not all turf is built the same. The turf we install from Big Bully Turf is American-made and uses cooling technology designed for desert climates. It reflects more of the sun's heat than standard turf, so the surface stays noticeably cooler underfoot. The infill matters too: we use infill chosen for heat and for pets, not the black rubber crumb you may remember from old sports fields.

Five ways to keep your turf comfortable in summer

1. Give it a quick rinse. A minute with the hose drops the surface temperature fast, and the turf drains completely.

2. Plan for shade. A tree, a shade sail or an Alumawood patio cover over the area you use most makes the biggest difference.

3. Choose the right turf. Lighter, cooling turf products run cooler than dense dark ones. We bring samples so you can feel the difference.

4. Use it when you would use any yard. Early morning and after sunset are the best times in a Las Vegas summer, turf or not.

5. Think about paws. If the ground is too hot for your bare hand, it is too hot for your dog. Rinse first or wait for shade.

Is turf still worth it in the desert?

For most Las Vegas homeowners, yes. Natural grass needs heavy watering to survive a summer here and still browns out. Turf stays green all year with no mowing and no sprinklers, and it comes with a lifetime manufacturer warranty.
